Top 10 Nutritional Management Approaches to Treating GERD
One of the safest treatment approaches to gastroesophagel reflux disease involves changing not only the foods one chooses, but also the way one chooses to eat those foods. Take this first step towards “putting out the fire” and commit yourself today to a lifestyle of following these 10 suggestions.
Avoid large meals
Avoid high fat meals, especially saturated fats in meat and dairy products and desserts
Avoid eating 3 to 4 hours before bedtime; this may be the most effective nutritional measure for treating GERD
Avoid smoking
Avoid excessive intake of chocolate, alcohol, coffee and other caffeine containing beverages
Avoid carminatives (peppermint and spearmint)
Avoid foods with an acid pH, such as citrus juices, tomatoes and soft drinks when gastrointestinal inflammation exists
Avoid highly spiced foods (those with black pepper, chili powder, etc.) when inflammation exists
Avoid drinking large amounts fluid with meals; it is best to drink between meals throughout the entire day
Lower your intake of carbohydrates—especially the higher glycemic carbs
