Heartburn Cured by Norm Robillard PhD (ISBN -0-9766425-0-6) is an anecdotal and very readable account of the author’s journey from GERD to asymptomatic wellness. He makes the point that the real culprit is the high carbohydrate diet that most Americans eat. We take in more carbs than we can effectively process and the excess are fermented by bacteria to produce gas. The gas puts pressure on the stomach contents thereby causing reflux. He recommends a nutritional approach that limits carbohydrate intake to 25 grams per day until you become asymptomatic. Carbs can then be slowly increased up to about 70 grams per day or the amount that you remain asymptomatic.
